5 Things To Do Before School Starts

August can often feel like the busiest month of the year. Last minute summer vacations, finishing summer projects, and dreaded back-to-school shopping occupy all our free time. The truth is, once school starts our free time ends. So, it’s important to take advantage of the last few weeks of summer to knock some important things off your family’s to-do list.

#1 Enjoy quality time together.

Go get ice cream after dinner. Play hooky from work and spend the day with your kids by the pool. The fall brings full schedules, so soak up this sweet time together as a family.

#2 Spruce up your wardrobes.

The kids will get new clothes for a new school year, but what about the parents? August is a great time for everyone in the family to get some new fall clothes. (It may also be a great opportunity to get fresh family pictures taken in everyone’s new outfits!)

#3 Run through a family fire drill.

August is the season of getting prepared. So, prepare your family in the event of an emergency. Run through your exit plan if there is a fire or break-in. You will sleep better at night knowing that everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency.

#4 Revisit your kids’ college savings.

If you have your kids’ college funds invested, set up a phone call with your financial planner to talk about those returns. Research Texas Tomorrow Fund and other college savings funds, if you haven’t started saving yet. College costs continue to rise, so it’s never too early to start saving!

#5 Get your will done.

Use this season of getting prepared to prepare your will, power of attorney, and other estate planning documents. Go into the new school year stable and secure that whatever this next year brings your way, you and your family will be equipped to handle it.
